Trust for America’s Health Applauds the Confirmation of Dr. Vivek Murthy as the Next Surgeon General of the United States

Washington, DC, December 15, 2014 – The Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) applauds the U.S. Senate for confirming Dr. Vivek Murthy as the next Surgeon General of the United States. The following is a statement from Jeffrey Levi, PhD, executive director of TFAH and chair of the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health.

“I commend the Senate for confirming Dr. Vivek Murthy to be surgeon general.  I have worked with Dr. Murthy and know him to be a well-qualified, forward thinking and innovative leader—the kind of person needed to successfully serve as the nation’s doctor.

It’s no surprise that throughout the process Dr. Murthy received an avalanche of support from the public health and medical communities—we applaud the President and the Senate for making this important appointment.

As past surgeons general have brought attention to critical health issues such as the dangers and addictiveness of tobacco and the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Dr. Murthy has the promise to profoundly improve the health of the nation.

He has already stated his intention to make the obesity epidemic one of his top priorities, making his future work to educate the public instrumental in curbing the tide.

Quite simply, Dr. Murthy is the right person to mobilize the nation to address longstanding public health challenges and make prevention and health promotion the backbone of our communities—the best, most common sense way to improve health and reduce healthcare spending.

And, Dr. Murthy is uniquely qualified and skilled to bring the medical and public health communities together to create a culture of health in America. The public health community looks forward to working with him.”

Trust for America’s Health is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to saving lives by protecting the health of every community and working to make disease prevention a national priority. www.healthyamericans.org
