Some $890 million would be phased out of CDC’s budget by the end of fiscal 2018 as part of the House bill’s cut to the Affordable Care Act’s Prevention and Public Health Fund. That includes $40 million provided annually since 2011 to help states combat infectious diseases, including foodborne pathogens. If that money were to be lost — it is included in something called the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity cooperative agreement — it could mean fewer state employees to survey victims of foodborne illness or complete necessary lab work, explains John Auerbach, CEO of the Trust for America’s Health.
