Q&A: Just how prepared is Oregon for an outbreak?

We reported on Wednesday that Oregon is basically ready to protect the population against infectious disease outbreaks. But how ready are we really, and what kinds of outbreaks should we be on guard against?

I put these and other questions to Dr. Paul Cieslak, who oversees the Acute and Communicable Disease Prevention Section at the Oregon Public Health Division. He works frequently with environmental health professionals on foodborne illness and outbreaks.

The report, by Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, said Oregon scored 7 out of 10 on a list of key indicators of policies and capabilities to protect against infectious disease threats.
