State officials should reconsider their decision not to endorse grant applications by Milwaukee and University Health Services in Madison for health programs.

State officials are refusing to endorse applications for federal grants totaling about $27.5 million for programs that would promote healthier lifestyles in Wisconsin. The programs, planned by the Milwaukee Health Department and University Health Services in Madison, would cost the state next to nothing.

The state's position is curious at best. One in four Wisconsin residents is obese, and the state has the highest rates of obesity for adult African-Americans, according to a report by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
